PBIS

At Oakwood Elementary School, we implement a Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) program that focuses on creating a positive, respectful, and supportive school environment for all students. PBIS is a proactive framework that emphasizes teaching students the behaviors and expectations that contribute to a safe and productive school environment.

Our PBIS framework is built around three key pillars: Be Kind, Be Strong, Be Well. These principles guide our students' behavior and interactions both in and out of the classroom.

  • Be Kind means treating others with respect, empathy, and compassion. It’s about using kind words, helping classmates, and building a community where everyone feels valued and included.

  • Be Strong represents showing courage, perseverance, and responsibility. Students are encouraged to face challenges, make good choices, and take ownership of their actions both in and out of the classroom.

  • Be Well focuses on practicing healthy habits, managing emotions, executive functioning, and seeking help when needed to maintain overall well-being.

The image below outlines the specific traits that are explicitly taught through the SEL (Social-Emotional Learning) program called Purposeful People from Character Strong.

By reinforcing these pillars, our PBIS program helps build a school culture where students feel supported, valued, and motivated to succeed. Students set individual goals and classroom goals and have the opportunity to earn Bear Bucks when demonstrating these values. We work closely with families to create a strong partnership in promoting these behaviors, ensuring that our students are not only academically successful but also socially and emotionally resilient.
